Anca Damián: “En animación tienes toda la libertad para crear mundos”

The best way to describe the Romanian filmmaker Anca Damián is by referring to the image of Juan Sin Miedo. But none like the passion that she puts into his narrative for which she has found his voice in animation. A speech that is fearless neither in how it tells it nor in what it tells.

This is his latest film, The Island. The new, very, very free adaptation of Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is closer to the surrealist play ‘Insula’, by Gellu Naum, to which Damián has added myths and realities, images that seem to come from paintings by Miro, Dalí, or El Bosco but made with materials more typical of artistic expressions such as Burning Man. All this in the tone of an anti-colonial and quite visionary musical.
